Research Blog #1: Initial Topic Idea

The topic I am considering for the class project is involving mental health in higher education, basically if universities are allocating enough resources towards it when compared to other programs such as sports, also if there is more or less stigma surrounding such topics in an educational environments such as college when compared to general society views. I picked this topic because it interests me the most since it ties in to my psychology major

    This is a timely and interesting topic, and many students have explored it from various angles. The most salient and practical issue right now is that there has been a huge increase in anxiety among students, and that rise has happened very fast, so that state schools especially are scrambling to meet the demand for services at college, and many do not offer adequate support because of that. But there are many angles to explore on this issue, and the strongest papers found an approach to the topic that made it their own.

Research Blog #3: Three Academic Sources

1. Eisenberg, Daniel, et al. "Stigma and help seeking for mental health among college students."  Medical Care Research and Review  66.5 (2009): 522-541. - This will help refine my topic because the author discusses how stigma about mental health among college students stands as a barrier for students to seek out help that they need. The author conducts an experiment using a random sampling of students from 13 different universities. The results from this study will help with my topic. 2. Prince, Martin, et al. "No health without mental health."  The lancet  370.9590 (2007): 859-877. - This article looks at the affects of mental health issues among young adults globally. Research Blog #2: Scouting the Territory

My topic idea has not changed and I will still be looking at mental health in higher education. I am still in the process of refining it, so far I've narrowed it down to looking at the degree of awareness on mental health  present in higher education. Basically how much support is dedicated towards it, if there is stigma surrounding it, and whether students are being properly educated on mental health issues. While searching online I have found that the key terms most helpful were mental health and college. I found a lot of scholarly article and research done on students with mental health issues in college and how statistics show that this number has gone up. Issues discussed online mainly revolve on increasing mental health awareness on campuses across America, in fact what I found most surprising is that my actually has a campaign called mtvU that goes to different universities to promote mental health awareness.
